Fiber artist Shelley Hoist is showing two pieces in the Hawaii Craftsmen’s Fiber Hawaii 2012 “In or Of or About Fiber” juried art exhibit, on display through Saturday at the Honolulu Museum of Art School Gallery.
Hoist, who lives in Kealakekua, has been making fiber art from the sheath of various palms for more than 15 years. She finds inspiration in the uniqueness of the materials she uses and allows the natural beauty of the fiber to shine through. The sheath of the palm is soaked in water until soft enough to form and stitch before it dries hard.
Hoist’s work can be seen at the monthly Kokua Kailua Village Stroll, online and in select galleries. The exhibit is sponsored by Hawaii Craftsmen and partially supported by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, McInerny Foundation and G.N. Wilcox Trust.
